Would it be possible to use something other than the scratch tools for the project? I was thinking something like a wooden skewer? I remember we would do something like this in grade school. We would cover a page in different colors (using crayons) then cover it with black and scratch a design. It was cool! Cannot recall what we used to scratch.

BEST ANSWER: You could absolutely use something else. Wooden skewers should work nicely and be similar to what it comes with (included scratchers are black plastic. One side fine tip, the other a little larger/flatter).
