BEST ANSWER: You can use just about anything from a coin, to a nail file, to even your nail.
Are the scratching tools sharp? I'm at a school in the Bronx and I worry about the kids stabbing each other.

BEST ANSWER: No sharper than a sharpened pencil. If a child is safe with a pencil, then this would be fine.
