Fun craft!
This craft is good for older elementary school kids, not for the smaller ones. We did this craft at our recent children's camp. Not to be too gender-stereotypical, but the boys liked it too (score!). It takes a bit of planning to choose which color goes where, so they all did look different. The kids needed a toothpick or unbent paper clip to help peel off the small sections; also scissors to cut open the sand packets. I suggest working over a paper plate so not too much sand gets on the floor :-)

Could have been better!
In theory, they are great, but the kids had a hard time peeling the pieces that they wanted to put sand on. All the other sand crafts that we've gotten from Oriental Trading have been real easy to do, but not this one. Takes longer than it should. Was easier for 3-4th graders. Kindergartners struggled with it.

A hit!
This was great. Close supervision with smaller kids. Prior prep needed to prevent a huge sandy mess. The kids and adults loved this.

Too Difficult
I had a difficult time peeling away the "sticky" part because the words are so small. Would recommend to older children/ teens.

Again, most important is the bible theme using in VBS
Liked the colors and variety although I thought they were coming in packs of three each. A bit disappointed in that. Challenging enough for kids at the kid level I selected.

This package did not come with instructions, how do you wet the sand to stick in different areas Item 48/8177

  • BEST ANSWER: I have done other similar projects. As the other person stated, when you peel off the paper it is self-adhesive. The trick is to think it through, and start at the center, peeling only one section at a time, or start on the top and work down so you can slide off the excess sand and have it not stick where you don't want it. If there is a border, as with some of the fish type of projects, for sure save that for last. I also had them work in pairs, one holding and one pouring on the sand. The kids loved them, and it was a great finished product.
