Are the bins hollow or solid? Do they stand up on their own, without the box?

BEST ANSWER: They are hollow. They will stand on their own without the box, but the will topple quickly as the rings are tossed at them. You cannot open the top of the bottles to fill with weight (unless you sawed off the top which could leave ragged edges).
