Nice decorative lanterns!
I bought these to put on my living room fireplace hearth, and they actually look great! There is some assembly required and the glass panels aren't very secure. I just try to be careful when moving them. I really love these!

Can the glass be removed so I could paint the metal?

BEST ANSWER: Yes! In fact, they arrive without the glass in place. The glass is super simple to put in/take out.
I cannot tell from the photos- do these open via a door in the front or do you insert the decorations by taking off the top?

BEST ANSWER: You insert the candle by removing the top piece they do not have a door.
Is the measurement at the base of the lantern or the top of the taper?

BEST ANSWER: The measurements are for the widest part, which is the top were it flares out, and the complete heights from bottom to the top of the lid.
Can these be used with pillar candles or just the battery operated tea light
