These percussion boxes (tiny box drums) work fine. Some other reviewers said that these did not make a drum sound, but that is because they were using them upside down and against a surface, as in the photos in the catalog. The solid wood side is what the mallet should strike, while the side with slits should be the back or the bottom, and the drum must be either held between fingertips and knees or set on little legs above the table surface to allow the sound to reverberate.

Fun for all ages
We used these with children at a summer day camp, age 4-12+ and every child loved them! We used felt pens to decorate, peel-off stickers as well. Children spent anywhere from 10-20 minutes decorating and them playing. You can also do "echo" rhythms in a group. Great way to teach about percussion instruments and to help them listen to the various sounds they could make on their drum. Right size for children's hands. Wood is smooth, sound's good. We taped mallets to twine and taped to drum so they would get home with both parts. Only down side was of 120 ordered 2 had broken mallets, consider when ordering. I would use again!

The participants enjoyed the project. They painted the drum with acrylics and added beads and a lanyard.

Fun drim
My Kindergarten choir kids really liked these drums! They enjoyed coloring them with markers. And then had lots of fun playing the drums with the stick. We made fun “tick-tick” sounds by striking in a corner & then in the middle.

Great quality. Great price!
I loved how sturdy this product was. Durable enough for children. They also create a great sound for the price. We used oil pastels to color these with. They turned out bright and vibrant.

Not worth it
They don't really make a sound-and the sound they do make isn't music. So kinda pointless. We used them as a craft instead of a music making toy.
I spray painted these so that the kids could decorate them since they are so small and everything fell right off them (that is the paints fault, but if they were bigger than they could have painted them themselves).

Instant Instrument ready to decorate!
These were very popular at a recent school event. The kids especially loved having a mallet that came with it. I thought a better name for the instrument may be "African Split Drum" because that is what inspired the design. You can make tick tock sounds with it, because of the design.
We used Crayola Washable Markers at our event to color these, and they were high quality enough markers to do the trick!
I plan to order these again next year. Very fun little instruments!

Great Product
I bought this product for a children's percussion class. It is a unique product. It is affordable, durable, and the children love that they can personalize their own instruments.
