Coasters are a fun project to DIY and they can add a beautiful accent to a room. There are so many different ways you can decorate simple coasters, and I especially loved how these blue and white ones turned out. They were inspired by the look of blue and white porcelain or even decorative tiles.
If you want to be precise you can sketch out your design lightly in pencil first. Start painting with the blue India Ink. India Ink is such a fun medium to work with. It looks a lot like watercolors, but it isn’t water-soluble. Which means that it won’t smear or bleed after it dries.
If you want to create a tile like design with a dark blue and a light blue, first start by painting the darker lines with pure India Ink.
Then mix about equal parts India Ink and water to create a lighter blue. You can use a palette or even the bottle cap. I tested the color first on the bottom of one of my coasters.
You can also paint a blue line around the edges of some of the coasters. I left a few white as well.
Because the India Ink isn’t water-soluble, it won’t smear when you set drinks on top of it. However, I feel like it’s always a good idea to finish off a project like this with a coat of Mod Podge® or spray sealant. And enjoy!
