A bug jar that looks like a bug? It doesn’t get any cuter than this! These Bug Jar Craft Kits are the perfect kids craft project for All About Bugs Week of Camp Fun. The pre-cut foam pieces make it easy for all ages to participate. Have your at-home campers each make their own bug jar and then head outside for a bug hunt!
Lay out the supplies for each camper. The bug jar kit comes with enough to make 6 ladybugs and 6 bees. In addition to the kits you’ll want to set out some tacky glue and toothpicks.
Poke the holes out of the bug body foam piece to create air holes for the bugs. We found a toothpick worked great for this step!
Add an even layer of glue to the backside of the body piece (avoiding the holes) and position it on the jar lid, lining up the holes on the foam with the holes in the lid.
Add the antennae and eyes to the outside of the jar lid with a generous amount of tacky glue and hold in place until set. We found that quick dry tacky glue worked better than Elmer’s® white glue for adding on the jar decorations, however if you want an even quicker hold you can use hot glue!
Add a bead of glue to the grass foam piece and wrap around the base.
Finish the jar by decorating with the other foam pieces.
Now you can put your jars to use by heading outside for a bug hunt! While roly-poly bugs are a favorite of Stella and Hazel, we also managed to find a mini grasshopper, a moth, and a spider to put in our bug jars!
