Start your engines! Ella and Annie have created some craft roll race cars and a homemade washi tape race track. No need to visit the raceway when you can have one in your very own living room. Yep, you heard us right! Have your kids design their very own race car using craft rolls (similar to toilet paper roll but much more sturdy). Let us walk you through how to build your very own raceway!
Paint the craft rolls with acrylic paint. Let the craft rolls dry completely. While the the craft rolls dry, use Sharpies® to color the wood circle wheels of your race car. You can also use wood markers.
Using a piercing tool, poke holes on the lower portion of the craft roll on both sides. We highly recommend measuring so that you make sure the wheels are even and actually touch the ground to roll; yes, we made these mistakes! Poke the dowels through the holes. Wait to trim the dowels until we get the wheels on. Repeat this step for the front and back of the craft roll.
Color 4 wood circles for each craft roll race car. The girls used Sharpies®, however we also love the wood markers. Once you have colored the wheels, have an adult drill a hole the same width of your dowel in the center of each wood circle. Slide the wheel onto the dowels.
Trim off the dowels leaving a little bit sticking out. Place a dab of hot glue on the end of each dowel so that the wheels to do not come off. Make sure to leave enough room for the wheels to spin.
Time to decorate your craft roll race car! The kids added colorful washi tape, sticker numbers and letters to design a stylish race car. If you'd like you can cut out a driver seat in the top of the craft roll, my kiddos decided not to do this.
Now it is time to build a race track for your newly designed craft roll race cars! Wash and dry the floor or table before starting to make the track. Simply lay down the washi tape to build roads; add parking spaces, windy roads or whatever your kids little hearts desire. We used these race car party wall cut outs to make our raceway official!
