The blossoms are blooming, the sun is shining and spring is in the air. What better way to get in the spring spirit than to create artwork inspired by the season with a fun butterfly craft. Spring is the season for warmer temperatures, new growth and transformation. Seeing a butterfly fluttering by on a bright sunny day is a spring rite of passage. I can think of few more poignant giveaways that the season has changed than seeing these fragile, flower-loving creatures out and about. But, rather than waiting on that magical moments, we decided to create our own vibrant butterflies.
Start by gluing two wood craft sticks together, in the shape of an X, with the hot glue.
Select a color of yarn and begin wrapping the yarn around the center of the sticks until you reach the side point where they intersect. Once you reach this point, wrap the yarn through another piece on the back and tie a knot.
Now start wrapping a second color of yarn on the wood sticks. You will weave the yarn in and out of the Popsicle sticks in a figure 8 pattern on each side of the first color. Continue weaving until you a 1/3 of the butterfly wrapped in yarn. Tie a knot in the back to secure.
Finally, begin weaving your third color of yarn on the wood sticks in the same figure 8 pattern. Tie a knot in the back to secure, use a dab of hot glue if necessary.
Now, it’s time to give your butterfly a body. Pick up one of the striped chenille stems and fold it in half so the ends meet. Wrap the chenille stem around the middle part of the butterfly wings and twist to secure.
Slide one of the bright spool beads down toward the bottom loop of the chenille stem.
Add the painted small wooden bead to the bottom and top of the chenille stems, twist to secure if necessary. Bend the chenille stems to create the looped antennas.
Finally, turn the butterfly over and use a dab of hot glue to secure the magnets.
Now you have a beautiful and colorful craft that is ready to proudly display notes or artwork! My girls loved making these and couldn’t wait to add them to their magnet memo board to hold notes.
