It’s easy to slip everyday family photos behind glass in a store-bought frame, but what about those sentimental but unusually shaped notes, postcards, and Polaroids that don’t fit into a standard sized frame? Read on to find out how you can give these mismatched memories a special place to shine using canvases and colorful buttons!
Cut a small length of Silver Baker’s Twine off the roll about 12″ in length. Thread one end of the twine through the eye of a needle, and tie a double knot into the opposite end.
Dump out a handful of Bright Rainbow Craft Buttons and choose a coordinating color scheme to work with.
Lay the buttons on top of a DIY Canvas in a pattern of your choice. For this project, a line design and a clusters pattern was used, but you can customize the look however you’d like! Be sure to avoid the furthest edges of the canvas since you won’t be able to sew around the solid wood frame. Once you’re satisfied with your design, sew the buttons directly to the canvas using the threaded needle from Step 1.
Once you’re finished sewing the buttons to the canvas, flip the canvas over and tie a knot at the back. Trim away and discard the excess twine.
Repeat Steps 1-4 on however many canvases you’d like! Try mixing up your button design each time, or alternate the sizes of your canvases using an 8″ x 8″ canvas for one photo holder, and a 12″ x 3/4″ x 12″ canvas for the other.
To prep your printed photos, notes, and postcards for hanging, flip them over and attach loops of twine to the backs of the mementos using American Crafts Adult Coloring Washi Tape.
Flip your canvases and twine-topped photos face-up, and slip the twine over the buttons on your canvases. Layer your photos and cards for a casual look, or hang one statement piece to create a focal point in your display!
