Christmas is a great time to step outside the box and craft something up that’s a little out of the ordinary, like this paper straw wreath! It’s a fun and festive way to bring holiday cheer to any door or mantel in your home.
For a paper straw wreath like this, I like to make my own wreath base from foam board I have on hand. I use a 6″ in diameter bowl and trace it onto the foam board with a pencil. Then, I place a 3 to 3.5″ in diameter bowl in the middle of the 6″ circle and trace it. Next, I use an Xacto knife to cut along the pencil lines. If you don’t want to make your own wreath base you can always buy a 6″ Styrofoam wreath form.
You’ll need 45 paper straws for this step. Begin by hot gluing 4 straws to the wreath form, creating four quadrants. Make sure the straws are flush with the inside of the wreath. Working in one quadrant at a time, glue a straw in the middle of the quadrant. Once your middle straw is set, fill in the remainder of the space, making sure that the ends of the straws are equally spaced (about an inch to an inch and a half). Repeat this process with the remaining 3 quadrants.
Grab 42 paper straws and cut them down to 6″ in length. Glue the straws between the straws on the first layer. Continue until you have a full layer of straws.
Take 21 paper straws and cut them in half. Glue the straws between the straws on the second layer. Continue until you have a full layer of straws.
Grab your can tab and slightly bend it. Turn the wreath over and glue the can tab on the backside with the hot glue gun. If you need to accommodate for a bigger wreath hook, you can attach a piece of ribbon, with hot glue, instead of the tab.
It may look a little intimidating, but this wreath is very easy to make. If you can operate a glue gun, you can make a paper straw wreath.
