Looking for a fun and interesting way to add some patriotic flair to your front door or mantel? I have you covered with this striking DIY patriotic wreath. And in case you couldn’t tell, it’s made of mostly paper straws. Pretty cool, right?
To create your own wreath form, use a 6″ in diameter object, like a bowl, and trace it on to a piece of foam board. Then, place a 3 to 3 1/2″ in diameter circular object (like a ribbon spool) in the middle and trace it. Next, cut along the pencil lines with an Xacto knife. The final dimensions of the wreath form I used in this tutorial is 6″ and 3.25″ in diameters.
Grab 45 paper straws. Begin by gluing 3 straws to the wreath form to create 2 sections, making the straws flush with the inside of the wreath form. Within one quadrant, glue a straw in the middle. Fill in the remaining space with more straws, making sure that the straws are equal distance apart. Once the top half of the wreath is done, glue another straw between the remaining blank space. Repeat with the remaining half of the wreath.
Cut 42 straws down to 6″ in length. Glue them in between the straws on the first layer.
Cut 21 blue with white star straws in half, so you end up with 42 total. Glue them in between the straws on the second layer.
To finish your DIY straw wreath, bend the can tab slightly. Turn the wreath over and glue the can tab on. If you need a bigger hook, you can attach a bigger piece of ribbon instead.
