If you've wanted to try out weaving this is a great project to start. It's super easy to make your own loom out of a piece of cardboard and weave your own wall hanging, trivet, or coasters. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a simple woven coaster, and even how to change colors to create colorful stripes.

Cut a piece of cardboard about 5 inches by 10 inches. Then measure every 1/4 of an inch on both sides. I made 16 marks which was perfect for a coaster. You can make it bigger or smaller, but make sure you have an even number of marks. Then cut each mark and wrap yarn tightly around your cardboard through each mark.

Tape the end of a piece of yarn to a wooden popsicle stick and use it to weave. Basically you want to go over then under then over then under until you reach the edge. Then you weave back in the opposite direction. Each row should alternate the over/under pattern. You can weave a pencil at the top of your loom to speed up the process.

Continue weaving. When you want to change colors, just start with a new piece of yarn and let the edges hang off the side. Make sure you don't weave too tightly. It can be helpful to weave with a little arch in the middle and then push down on your weaving with a plastic fork.

When you have finished weaving, cut the ends of the wrapped yarn and then take every two strands and tie a knot as close to your weaving as possible. Repeat the same process at the top. Then trim the edges to be about 1 inch on each side.

Flip over your finished weaving to secure and hide the extra pieces of yarn. Use a lacing needle to weave the extra pieces into the back. Then trim the ends. You can also add a small dab of Mod Podge or fray check to keep these pieces from coming undone.
