These colorful spider web placemats are an absolutely adorable way to add some spooktacular spirit to your Halloween kids' table! We created these cuties for a Trick-or-Treating Dinner Party, but they would work well for any Halloween dinner party. They're easy to make and add such a fun flair to the table. Top them with plates that have our free Halloween printables attached for a fabulously frightful finishing touch.
Use strips of Washi Tape to create random-sized sections on a DIY Canvas. We chose five colors of FolkArt® Multi-Surface Acrylic Paints to use on our placemats, so we used four pieces of tape to create five different sections (one section for each color). Press the tape down and make sure it is fully adhered so that paint can't seep underneath.
One color at a time, brush the paint onto your canvas. For ease and convenience, we used one paint brush per color of paint. Continue until the entire canvas is painted. Let dry completely.
Once the paint is completely dry, carefully and slowly remove the tape. The color blocked design will appear like magic. This part is my favorite...it's so mesmerizing to watch!
Next, use a thin paintbrush to apply lines of black paint in the shape of a large asterisk onto the center of the canvas. There is no pressure here...the lines can be perfectly imperfect. These lines will be the foundation of your spider web.
Being careful not to smear the wet paint with your hand, begin adding curved painted lines between the asterisk lines to create the spider web strands. Continue the lines until the web covers the entire canvas. Let dry.
When the paint is completely dry, add plastic Scary Spiders to the spider web. We chose not to adhere them because we thought it would be fun for the kids to be able to play with the spiders and move them around on the web, but you can absolutely adhere them if you choose to. Just be sure to adhere them to the outer areas so that you have a flat space for a plate to rest on top.
