Make an adorable stork centerpiece for a baby shower using white floral kissing balls, fluffy feathers and fun craft supplies. This cute baby shower centerpiece look just like a stork on tall legs, and can be made for a boy, girl, or gender neutral baby shower. Change out the colors of the flowers and party hat with pom poms, or add your own creative touches to this versatile baby shower decorating idea.
Gather and prepare your supplies. An oval wood sign is the repurposed base for this creative centerpiece. You could also use a tree slice for a very cute look. A half styrofoam balll and a sheet of light green foam, trimmed to size, are also needed.
Use hot glue to attach the styrofoam half ball to the wood base.
Use a staple gun to attach the green foam sheet to the wood base, tightly covering the styroforam ball. Fold the foam over where necessary to create a smooth silhouette.
Paint two wood dowels with bright orange acrylic paint, and one dowel with white acrylic paint. Allow them to dry thoroughly before proceeding to the next step.
Insert the two orange dowels into the bottom of a white floral kissing ball, spacing them apart about two inches. These will be the legs of the stork. The center of the flower ball is made from styrofoam, so it's quite easy to add the dowels.
Next, you'll create the neck of the stork by adding the white dowel. You should stand your "stork" on its legs and then add the white dowel so that it comes forward at an angle. Insert the other end of the dowel securely into the second floral ball, creating the head of the stork.
Use hot glue to attach a short length of white feather boa, concealing the white dowel and giving the neck a fuller look.
Insert three white ostrich feathers into each side of the stork body; these are the wings of the stork. Using the same technique, create a tail for the stork at the back of the piece.
Using hot glue, attach sections of a moss runner to the foam base, concealing it entirely. Sink the legs of the stork into the covered half styrofoam ball, which will provide stability to allow the stork to stand freely. Use the free template provided here to create two feet from orange foam. They're hot glued to the legs on top of the moss, so it appears the bird is standing on a mound of moss.
Using the beautiful blooms from a spring floral bouquet, use hot glue to attach flowers all around the base of the centerpiece. When finished, none of the underlying foam should show through. It should all be covered with moss and flowers.
Use the provided template to create a long, pointed beak for the stork using an orange foam sheet, rolled and glued in place. Carefully apply hot glue all around the opening of the cone shape that you create, and press it firmly to the floral ball where a beak should be. Hold it in place for several seconds to ensure it is securely attached. You can add a little extra glue if needed.
Use hot glue to carefully adhere a pair of large google eyes to the stork. Practice laying the eyes out before you glue, and make sure the stork is "looking" where you want it to before applying adhesive. To dress my stork up a little, I hand cut a set of lashes from a black foam sheet and placed them behind the google eyes.
