The first step is optional but will give your seating chart a more elegant look. Using a wood stain and a dry wash cloth stain your piece of birch plywood. To get a deeper color stain your wood several times. To get this mahogany tone I stained my wood three times.

Your wood stain should dry within a couple of minutes. Once it is dry to the touch, use a ruler to measure where the seating chart names will go.

Once you have marked your seating chart it is time to place your guests names. Save money on a calligrapher and use vinyl for this step. Using vinyl makes this project go a lot faster and will give you a uniformed look. I also used vinyl to add the words "your seat awaits" at the top of the seating chart. Or you can use alphabet stickers .

Arrange the garden party table numbers vertically on the left side of your seating chart with about an inch and a half between and attach with glue dots.

Using your ruler place a small dot to the left of each guests name. Carefully place a nail over each dot and hammer into place. Repeat this step for each of the table numbers.

Using embroidery floss you will now connect each guests name to the table number they are seated at. Use a different color of embroidery floss to define each table. To start, tie a knot with your embroidery floss at the nail in front of the table number. Pull the string over to the guests name and wind around the nail. Then pull the string back to the table number and secure with another knot.
