Who knew a basic wood crate could offer so many crafting possibilities? These unfinished wood slat cratesare the perfect size to display and organize a variety of items around the house. In the past, I have covered these crates with washi tape and turned them into colorful book bins, but for the Supply of the Month Challenge I decided to cover a crate with pretty gold leaf and use it as a modern plant holder! Apply metal leaf adhesive to the bottom two slats of the wooden crate with a foam brush. Let set for 20-30 minutes until it becomes tacky.
Apply the gold leaf sheets by laying them across the two bottom slats. The excess leaf below the crate can be easily peeled off and applied to another area of the adhesive.
Use a dry foam brush to smooth down the gold leaf and remove any excess bits. Continue adding gold leaf until you have covered both of the bottom slats. I just added gold leaf to the front of my plant holder, but you could do more sides if you like.
If you like, you can paint the top two slats with your acrylic craft paint. I chose a light green for mine, and decided to paint the two short sides of the crate as well.
Add a pretty touch to the handles of the crate by wrapping them with gold faux leather cording. Just secure the start and end of the cording with a dab of hot glue.
Two of these metal galvanized pots fit perfectly in the crate to hold plants. You can pot the plants directly in these (you may want to first drill a hole for drainage), or you can slot a plant in its plastic store-bought pot in these and remove as needed to water.
I found a couple tropical houseplants to fill my wooden crate plant holder with. They both require low light so are perfect for displaying on my foyer console table!
