Everyone likes to be remembered on their birthday. I don't care who you are or your age-- it's nice to get a little something unexpected, just letting you know someone thought about you on your special day. My church recently learned that doesn't always happen in underprivileged areas, where often both parents are working and something like a present and cake slips through the cracks. We wanted to help, so we worked with OTC to put together little birthday bags filled with goodies for senior-aged missionaries to hand out to children and mothers in their areas on their special days. Kind of like a gift from your grandparents. No strings attached-- just a little something to let them know someone remembered, and someone cared. Can I just say, OTC was amazing! I put together a list of possible items for inside the bags and they donated all of them! It was far beyond our expectations. And this company knows how to {birthday} party. We started with a simple birthday gift bag. We broke out items based on age and gender. We then went assembly chain style down the tables, filling each bag with a birthday cake mix, candles, a birthday banner, coloring books crayons, art kits, little toys, you name it. For the mothers, we compiled notebooks, lotions, and small items that would just make them feel special. It was not only as opportunity to serve others, but also a great chance to get to know each other more. Before we knew it, every bag had been assembled. We labeled each one and left an empty birthday card inside so the bag could be personally addressed to each birthday recipient. This was a great opportunity to look outside ourselves and remember the needs of others. And feeling special and loved is indeed a need.
