Announce the gender of your baby at your gender reveal party with a Gender Reveal Cake! No one will know if you're having a boy or girl until you cut open the cake to reveal either pink or blue inside! For even more fun, add some blue or pink candy inside the cake so it pours out when you cut the first piece.

Ingredients:
Makes 1 Cake
  • 1 White Cake Mix

  • 1 1/4 c. Water
  • 3 Eggs
  • Non-Stick Baking Spray

Place the eggs, water, oil and 1 box of white cake mix into a mixing bowl. Beat on medium-high speed for 2-3 minutes until fully combined.

Mix drops of blue (or pink) food coloring into the cake batter until you get the desired shade.

Fully cover the insides of two round cake pans with non-stick baking spray. I like to use the butter flavored baking spray.

Fill each cake pan 3/4 of the way full of cake batter and bake in 350 degree oven for 45-50 minutes. Test to see if the cakes are done by inserting a skewer into the center of the cake. If it comes out smooth, the cakes are done.

When the cakes are done, remove them from the oven and let cool in their pans for 5 minutes. Turn the cake pans upside down and remove the cakes from the pans and transfer them to a wire baking rack to fully cool. The cakes must be fully cool before the next step.

Using a large serrated knife, cut the tops of each cake so that both are even and level.

Place one of the cake layers on a white cake stand and place the other layer on top of the first one, with the cut half facing down. Then, using the serrated knife, cut a 2-3 inch hole down the middle of the cakes. Keep the piece of the cake you cut out of the top half as you will need to put it back in the cake later.

Remove the top half of the cake and set it to the side. Put a layer of icing on the bottom cake, leaving the hole exposed.

Place the top half of the cake on top of the iced bottom half of the cake and fill the middle with pink or blue chocolate candies. Only fill the inside up to the middle of the cake so you have room to put the cut out top piece of the cake back in.

Place the cake that you cut out of the top half of the cake back into the hole to cover the candy.

Fully cover the cake with the white icing. Let it sit out without a cover on it so the icing has time to stiffen a bit.

You can now add a cake topper to match your gender reveal theme. For my owl-themed gender reveal party, I gently placed a cupcake board on top of the cake and then put a ceramic owl right on top of the cupcake board. How cute is that?
