I have been planning to create a fun art station for my kids and what better time than the new year! My house has been a work in progress for the past 5 years, can you relate? One of my resolutions this year, is to fix up our home and I decided to start with a space for the kids. The kids art station was a super easy DIY project. Everyone needs their own space, right? Even your littles!
Prep the wall where you would like to create your chalkboard. Using painters tape, tape off where you want the chalkboard to stop. Make sure to measure so that you have a nice straight line. Tape the baseboards and side walls too.
Paint the bottom portion of the wall with the chalkboard paint. It took about 3-4 coats. Allow to dry overnight. If you’re anything like me, you’ll touch up the baseboards too!
Get a piece of decorative wood (a small strip) to separate the chalkboard from the wall. You can find these in the baseboard section of Home Depot. Some are white and some you have to paint. You can use finishing nails to attach the wood border.
Using the white cup hooks, hang the clear buckets. I filled the buckets with my kids’ favorite art supplies, scissors, crayons, stamps and chalk for their new chalkboard (fingers crossed this keeps my 3 year old from drawing on all the walls but this chalkboard paint wall).
I searched for free kids’ wall art on Pinterest and printed a few of my favorite prints. I bought simple white frames at Walmart for under $3.
I covered an old bulletin board with fabric for the kids to pin their artwork to. To cover your own board, simply measure and cut the fabric to the size of your bulletin board. Lay the fabric on top of the board and use thumb tacks to create a border and hold the fabric in place. Fold the fabric over the edges of the board and use a staple gun to staple it to the back of the board. That’s it! I am now working on some matching curtains with the remainder of the fabric for our kitchen window.
Tip: To clean the chalkboard, wipe clean with a damp sponge.
I have kids ranging in age from 3 to 6 years of age and each one of them LOVED their new art station. I found the IKEA table on Amazon for around $50. Overall, creating this art station keeps my younger kids busy and gives my oldest child Ella, a fun place to do her homework! I plan to add a few shelves for books too! Depending on your space, you could add a cute rug for reading and use these foldable storage bins for toys.
