I love to help my students make a personalized gift for their families to celebrate Valentine's Day. It is the perfect time to show appreciation and love for someone special in their lives. Students will love to make this fun "I Love You to Pieces" coaster and then give it to a special loved one in their lives.
Paint the DIY Coasters white using Crayola Acrylic Paint. I did two thin layers and then let dry completely.
Next, have students draw a heart using a pencil first (you can erase on the paint) and then trace with a Black Sharpie®. This works best if the white paint is completely dry prior. If you feel your students may struggle with this, make a heart pattern with Wood Heart Ornament and have students trace.
Have students begin to tear pieces of Mini Valentine Tissue Squares. I like to have the tissue paper torn and ready to go prior to applying the glue so it is easier for students to grab. I suggest tearing each square into about 6 pieces and using 2-3 different colors to add depth to the heart.
Now it's time to add some color! Using a fingertip, add clear washable school glue to the center of the heart. I add glue to a regular paint palette so it is easier for students to use. After the glue is applied, students can start adding layers of Mini Valentine Tissue Squares. Remind students to overlap the colors and continue to apply a light amount of glue when needed, even over the top of the tissue paper to help seal it down.
Add an accent border using a black Sharpie®. Using a pencil, write the saying "I Love You to Pieces" and then trace over with a black Sharpie®. Seal the tissue paper by applying a thin layer of Mod Podge.
Now your coaster is complete! Students will love to take this little keepsake home to their loved one for Valentine's Day.
