Have you ever painted on canvas before? It's really fun watching the colors seep right into the fabric. We made beautiful nature inspired wall hangings in art class the other day with the 3 and 4 year olds. Every child was successful and delighted to take home their beautiful work.
Tape down the canvas to your work table. This is great for two reasons. One, it will hold the canvas in place while your child paints. Two, the tape will create a border around the canvas that you can pull off at the end for a really nice professional finish.
Then, add details with other fall color oil pastels. Remind your child to press hard when working with oil pastels so the color comes off on the canvas.
Use the liquid watercolors to go right over the oil pastels. The oil pastels will say “Hey, get off me, you’re not my friend.” After all, oil and water don’t mix right? This part is fun for the kids because they love to see how the watercolors won’t cover the oil pastels. Cover the whole canvas with watercolor.
Take a paper towel and soak up an puddles left behind from the watercolors.
With a brush and white glue, invite your child to brush glue over their nature wall hanging. Sprinkle glitter anywhere they brushed the glue. I like to use salt and pepper shakers for my glitter. The mess is way more contained this way and the kids love to shake, shake, shake.
Didn’t these come out so beautiful? Pretty impressive for 3 and 4 year olds I’d say. They’d look so pretty with some leaves and small pine cones attached to the wood too. Happy Fall!
