Learning how to sew can be safe and fun for kids of all ages! As a child, my grandmother and mother taught me how to sew. I worked on my first quilt, by the age of 10. This is a skill I have used many times in my life. Teach your kids a basic stitch using our plastic lacing needles and paper plate weaving templates! Ella and Annie have created a rainbow, apple, flower, heart and cross to get you started.

1.
Rainbow Paper Plate Weaving

Print the rainbow template. Cut out the template and tape on the glossy side of the paper plate. Turn the plate over and trace the rainbow onto the plate. Using a tack, punch tiny holes around the outline of the clouds. Next, punch holes in the center of each rainbow border as pictured. Erase the border of the rainbow so just the holes remain. Now for the fun part! Thread a plastic needle with blue yarn and begin weaving the clouds. Go up one hole from the back of the plate and down the another hole through the front. Repeat these steps with the colors of the rainbow.

Trace the flower template onto the back of the white paper plate. Using a tack, punch tiny holes around the border of the flower. Punch holes on the center of the flower in the shape of a small circle. Thread a plastic needle and weave yellow yarn in the center of the flower in the circle. Use pink or red yarn for weaving the flower. Start from the back of the plate with the needle and come up one hole and down another.
