Succulents are one of my favorite plants. It's probably because they are the only plant that I can keep alive. They are super easy to care for, as long as you don't over water them. They also do well even when they've been neglected for days or even weeks. Succulents are super versatile. You can use them in centerpieces, as place cards, in bouquets, and even in wreaths. Follow these 5 simple steps to create your own living succulent wreath.
Sphagnum moss is a bit unruly. To make it easier to work with, soak the sphagnum moss in water until it’s damp. This allows you to mold the moss into a wreath form.
Attach floral wire to wreath frame. I found that it was much easier to work with if you attach four pieces of floral wire to the frame. I just cut a 3-4 ft. section and wrapped it around each of the four supports. Ring out the soaked sphagnum moss and place it onto the wreath frame and form a moss ring. Take one piece of floral wire and wrap it around the moss and the frame until you meet your next piece of wire. Secure the wire by tightly wrapping the end around the wreath frame. Continue doing this until you have made it all the way around the frame.
If you are using succulents, as opposed to clippings, you will need to gently remove all the dirt from the base of the succulent leaving just the roots and the flower. Once you have removed all the dirt from all of your succulents, temporarily place the succulents on the moss until you are happy with the way they look. Once you are happy with your arrangement, set your succulents next to your wreath frame.
Use the end of your paint brush to create a hole slightly larger than the size of the roots. If you are using a succulent clipping, make a hole just a little bigger than the end of your clipping. For a succulent, gently tuck the end of the roots in the hole. Use greening pins to secure in place. If you are using succulent clippings, use a hot glue gun and some glue sticks to glue into place. You can also use clear tacky glue too. Don’t worry, you won’t harm the succulent with either glue option. The succulents will root right through the glue. Simply add some glue to the bottom of the clipping. Place the clipping stem into the hole you created and hold it in place for a few seconds allowing the glue to dry. Repeat this process until you have added the desired amount of succulents or succulent clippings to your wreath.
Use your paint brush to dust off all of the dirt and moss from your succulents. Double check that all of your succulents are staying in place. You may need to go back in and add a few more greening pins or a bit more hot glue.
