Does your wall need a little color boost? Make a DIY garland! These colorful rainbow felt and pom-pom garlands are the perfect complement to your wall art or a fun way to dress up walls all on their own. In addition to making great year-round decor, they make pretty party or holiday decor too! I created the rainbow garlands for the December Supply of the Month Challenge. Our task was to create a craft using these Gigantic Fantastic Felt Sheets. The nice part about these felt garlands is there is no sewing required – the felt is either tied on or hot glued to baker’s twine. I threaded some fluffy pom-pom beads on as well to make them extra colorful and fun!
Start by cutting 1/2″ wide strips of felt. I like the zig-zag edges created by the pinking shears, but you can use regular scissors as well.
Cut each of the strips in half so they are roughly 4.5″ long.
To create the garland, tie each felt strip onto a length of baker’s twine.
To create this multi-colored garland, I added colors randomly and pushed the felt pieces close together to create a full look. Continue adding more strips until you get the length you want.
You can also add pom-pom beads to your garland by threading a thin darning needle with the end of the baker’s twine and pushing the needle through the pom-pom bead to string them on. I added some pom-pom beads to each end of this multi-colored garland.
Use a circle template to cut the same size circles out of the felt. You can also use these simple stencil shapes to cut out a variety of different shapes from the felt.
Create the garland by folding the circle over the baker’s twine and adding a dab of hot glue to each upper corner (where my finger is in the photo below). For this garland, I strung three pom-pom beads between each felt circle.
I created another rainbow garland by tying on 10 felt strips of the same color and adding three coordinating pom-poms between each color. There are so many variations you could make with these garlands!
The garlands look especially sweet when hung together. I love the happy pop of color they bring to the wall above my desk!
