Tie a 4 ft. length of strong sewing string onto the bottom right corner of a 4″-8″ wide by 3 plus yards of burlap fabric or burlap ribbon. The length of your burlap will depend on how long you would like your finished garland and how ruffled you would like it.

Using a long sewing needle, begin to weave the string through the burlap in a zigzag pattern, from top to bottom. For bigger gathers, sew the stitches further apart. For smaller gathers, sew the stitches closer together. Don’t worry about what the stitches look like, you won’t see them once you gather the burlap.

Sew the zigzag pattern for about 2 feet and tighten the string so that the burlap gathers. Be sure not to pull too hard or your string could break and that would just be tragic. Continue sewing and tightening every 2 feet until you have reached the desired garland length. Tie off the string to finish.
