After I created my new classroom library space, I felt like it needed something to tie all my chosen colors together. I decided that creating some fun reading themed pillows would be the perfect addition! To make it even more fun, I tie-dyed them! Follow the steps below to create your own pillows customized just for your classroom!

Step

Pick out the Learn Your ABCs Alphabet Stencils you want to use. I chose “READ” for this pillow case. Lay the stencils out so that you can check for spacing.

Using the painter’s tape, tape down a 3-inch border all the way around your desired letter. If the letter has a “center” you will need to place a tiny amount of tape on the back of it so that the colors do not bleed under it. There is a piece of rolled-up painter’s tape under the middle portion of the letter “R” in the picture.

Mix the Tulip Fabric Spray Paint (according to the super easy package directions) and spray on to your letter. Make sure you get good coverage and spray it more than once. Put the plastic gloves on that are included with the Tulip Fabric Spray Paint Kit and carefully wipe off any excess dye with paper towels. It is then safe to take off the first stencil and place and tape down your second letter. You will need to repeat this step for each letter, making sure you are only spraying one letter at a time.

After I was done with my letters, I carefully (while wearing gloves) rolled up my pillow case and twisted it and then secured it with the included rubber bands. I chose another color to accent the blue I used for the letters. I sprayed all the white I could see on the pillow case lime green.

Wrap the pillow case in plastic wrap and let it sit for at least 6 hours. Wash (per directions on the Tulip Fabric Spray Paint box).

Outline (if desired) the letters with the permanent marker and then place the pillow insert into the pillow case. On the second pillow case, I was a little more adventurous and used two colors to create a different look.

I think they fit in perfectly!! I sprayed them with a fire retardant spray and left the tags on to comply with my district’s fabric policy. Be sure to check your policy for details!

Now that I’m done (for now) making these pillows, the Learn Your ABCs Alphabet Stencils are going into my writing center for my students to explore with. I love that the stencils are made from a thick, durable plastic and washed right off when I rinsed them in the sink. Markers will wash off easily too!
