Wall art doesn’t have to be expensive! It doesn’t have to be traditional or cookie-cutter either. It can be full of color and fun! Add a bohemian-inspired burst of color to your wall with nothing more than paint and placemats. Yep, you can make wall art from placemats! This pack of 12 raffia placemats was the inspiration for this fun project. Just paint the rings with a variety of colors for a bold tie-dyed effect and arrange on the wall for a major impact.
Start by protecting the surface where you will be painting. I like to use this rubber mat, but a plastic tablecloth also works great. Next, choose two paints for each placemat. I found that using two adjacent colors in the Americana paint pack created a nice complementary palette, such as pink and red, or light blue and dark blue. These chubby brushes are the perfect size to fit into the little paint pots.
Start by painting a section of the placemat, such as the outside fringe. Use the stitched circles in the placemat as a guide for your painting. Each paint pot has enough paint for one ring around the placemat. Then add a second color and slightly overlap with the first to create a tie-dyed effect.
Repeat with more placemats, varying the parts of the placemat that you paint to create different designs. The placemats come in a pack 12, so you can make your wall decor grouping as large as you like!
Hang on the wall with pushpins. You can hide the pins under the layers of raffia in the placemat.
While I love the rainbow look, you could always use a more limited or muted color palette for a completely different look. For a modern effect, try black paint paired with the raffia placemats. So many possibilities to make one-of-a-kind wall art!
