I am so excited to share with you a favorite reading incentive for kids! Read Beads. This is a perfect reading incentive to implement in the summer or just anytime during the school year. Teachers will love using it in their classrooms to motivate kids to read, read, read! I loved using this program as one of my reading motivation ideas during the year, when I taught adorable first graders!
I created an easy to use Read Bead Tracker sheet for the kids to keep track of minutes read. Download the sheet for free here. Our goal is to read 30 minutes a day at least 5 or 6 times a week. For each 10 minutes that my child reads, she/he will earn one bead. They love coloring in the squares after they read each day. At the end of the week, we gather together and count up the beads they have earned. They then add the beads to their necklace in progress.
We added the pretty beads to mini glass bowls. This makes it easy for tiny hands to choose their Read Beads. Loving the bright pony beads!
It’s fun to display this bright colored chart in a cubby or on the fridge. It’s also a good reminder to keep reading!
After they choose the Read Beads they earned, they can add to their necklace or bracelet. It was fun to watch them create patterns with the bright pony beads and other special beads.
A great trick to making sure the beads won’t fall off when stringing, tie a pony bead at the end of the stretchy string.
Loving these Sports Beads for the sport lover…look at those mini footballs! Kids also love adding a personal touch with the alphabet beads.
You can pin up the necklace with tape inside a closet or cupboard, as they add beads throughout the summer. As a teacher, you can display these necklaces on a bulletin board.
And after all that fun reading, your child will have a pretty necklace to wear! It’s amazing how one little bead can offer such positive motivation for little readers!
