Teaching Math Fact Families

It is important that students are able to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction facts at an early age. Students who are able to grasp this concept are more likely to have stronger fact fluency and tend to have a better understanding of the missing addend concept. To help make this skill hands-on and engaging, I allow my students to create their own fact family house!

We started our craft by creating an outline around the house and roof using a sharpie. Next, we added two round labels to make our numbers pop! To pick our numbers, we rolled two dice and attached our self adhesive numbers

Now create related addition and subtraction sentences using the rolled numbers. We used red sticker labels to create windows for our house. On each window we wrote a number and added our number symbols. This is a great way to make an informal observation based on if a student understands the concept of a fact family.
