This ruffled and rustic backdrop makes a stunning focal point for our Wedding Pie Bar Display. It’s simple to create using amazing, realistic looking wood plank paper, whimsical tissue fans, and hand-sewn ruffled burlap ribbon streamers. For this pretty scene, we’ve used a palette of red and black on neutral shades of brown. The black chevron ribbon adds a fun pop of pattern to the ruffled streamers, and the tissue fans create a multi-layered, dimensional effect, just like the professionals use!
Unroll the wide red burlap ribbon.
Thread a large basting needle with black thread. Use a basting stitch to sew loosely down the center. Use long stitches, so that the fabric can be gathered when completed.
When the end of the ribbon layers has been reached, gently pull the thread taut, and push toward the start point. This will cause the ribbons to gather, creating a ruffle.
When the desired ruffle size has been achieved, carefully tie off the end of the thread to secure. You may have to knot several times to create a knot large enough that it will not pass through the wide open weave of the burlap fabric.
Repeat this ruffling technique with the wide natural burlap ribbon roll, and each of the three black chevron ribbon rolls. You should have a total of 5 ruffled ribbon streamers. Set aside.
Open and secure five red tissue fans and three black tissue fans in your choice of sizes. Be sure to use a variety of sizes to create a designer look. Set aside.
Cut two eight-foot lengths of the Weathered Wood Paper from the roll. Apply securely to a wall with tape. The wood planks should run horizontally. Take special care to align the paper sheets so that the wood planks appear continuous in pattern from one sheet to the next.
Using removable decorator hooks or strong tape, create start and end points for your streamers, as well as for the tissue fans. Remember to leave enough length to allow the streamers to curve from one point to the next.
Attach streamers to decorator hooks, or use tape to attach to your surface, securing with twine.
Attach tissue fans to decorator hooks hung from top of backdrop against the wall or hanging from the ceiling, or use tape. Vary the height so that the fans are layered, with larger sizes in back, and smaller sizes in front, as shown.
