Does this mean that the folder/composition book would be stood up by its spine? That is, horizontally, or did you mean vertically?

BEST ANSWER: The measurement is referring to the rim of the basket which narrows to the bottom. To get the size you are looking for but bigger measurement than your folder or notebook.
Do letter-sized manila folders or composition books fit within these baskets? Three of my current book baskets cracked, and I've heard these are good, but I want to make sure they fit my kids notebooks.
Please, advise. The company I originally got mine from has them out of stock and I need these ASAP for my classroom :(
