Store-bought donut holes become mini bee hives when glazed with a lemon yellow glaze and stacked in cupcake pedestals. Add jelly bean honey bees to up the cuteness factor and all your guests will buzz with excitement at your Bee Themed First Birthday Party! Follow the steps below to create them for yourself.
- Glazed Donut Holes (8 per guest)
- 1 Bag Powdered Sugar
- Lemon Juice
- Yellow Jelly Beans (2 or 3 Per Hive)
- Wilton Edible Sugar Sheets
- Wilton Icing Writer
- Yellow Food Coloring
Begin by adding black stripes to the yellow jelly beans using a Wilton Icing Writer. Simply snip off the top of the tube, then gently squeeze two lines of icing over the top of each jelly bean.
Next, create a pair of wings for each of the jelly bean bees by cutting Wilton Sugar Sheets into small, teardrop shaped pieces with clean kitchen scissors. Be sure to cut two wings per bee.
In a medium glass bowl combine 1 cup of powdered sugar with 2 Tsp. lemon juice, along with 1 - 2 drops of yellow food coloring, and whisk together until smooth.
Next, attach the wings onto the bee body. Dip the pointed end of a wing into the glaze and lay it on top of another wing with the pointed ends together. Dip the combined wings into the glaze and gently press them onto the bees until they stick.
Using a small spoon, slowly drizzle the lemon glaze onto each of the donut holes. Let the donut holes sit a few minutes until the glaze has set.
Now, create your bee hives by stacking the glazed donut holes into the top of a clear cupcake pedestal. Start with three at the bottom, then four on top of the first three, then finish with one in the center on top. Note: I painted the bottom outside portion of the cupcake pedestals with yellow acrylic paint to coordinate with the theme.
Replace the tops of the clear cupcake pedestals onto the bottom portions, and then add one to two jelly bean bees to each donut hole bee hive. Add a tiny bit of glaze as needed to ensure the bees stick to the donut holes.
Finally, serve your Donut Hole Bee Hives during your little's 1st bee-day party and impress your guests with your creativity!
