Create a fun Wild Balloon Word Backdrop using a few simple craft supplies and modeling balloons. This backdrop coordinates with the full Young Wild and Free party I styled. This simple DIY craft can be tailored to fit any party theme or make any specific word you want to spell out. I chose the word "wild" to go along with my particular party theme. Here's what you need to know to make your own ballon backdrop.
Determine how you want your word to look on the wall. Select the font and size in your favorite software program. I created a vinyl stencil and applied it to the wall, but you can use a projector to project this onto your wall too. Apply stencil or project word onto wall.
Trace around your word directly onto the wall with a pencil. If you used vinyl, you will want to remove the vinyl stencil once you’ve traced around the entire word. Don’t be tempted to leave the vinyl up. Learn from my experience, this doesn’t work! If you are using a projector, simply trace around the word you projected. Another option would be to free-hand something on the wall if you are a good artist or a calligrapher.
Start with one letter at a time. Blow up balloons and fit them within your traced outline. This section requires a lot of trial and error and patience. Blow up a balloon, release some of the air to make sure it is the desired height of your letter, and then tie it off. Adhere it to the wall with Mavalus® Multi-Purpose Adhesive Tapefor a smooth surface or Clear Glue Dots for a more textured surface. (DISCLAIMER: Glue dots will likely remove your paint when removed. Proceed with caution). Glue Dots worked for my interior walls.
Continue adding balloons to complete each letter. Pro Tip: Add balloons in the way that you would write the letter. For example, when you write the letter “i” your first stroke is a downstroke. Your balloons will follow the same stroke pattern. Keeping this in mind makes it a lot easier to complete this project.
Fill in the remainder of your word following the same steps above. Pay careful attention when you have to make circular shapes like in lower case “d.” This is when you need to get creative.
